As a pilot project we would like to establish 10 elementary and middle schools in southern Mali with an enrolment of 1,500 students in total (150 students in each) in order to impede the recruitment of children to toil in artisanal gold mines.
The funding requirement would be approximately $750,000 USD including an informational campaign to convince parents to let their children go to school rather than work in artisanal mines.
The project will also include a lobbying campaign directed toward the legislative sector about the hazards of artisanal gold mining and handling of liquid Mercury so as to criminalize the practices and enforce bans on recruiting minors.
Once the 10 schools are underway, we aim to get gold mining corporations the world over to help fund a scaling up of the project so that child labor in artisanal gold mines can be eradicated permanently.
